Your sketchbook is a great tool you can use to combat anxiety and stress. You do not have to consider yourself an artist to be able to utilize this tool either. Let’s talk about some simple mindful activities that will alleviate stress and help you fill up those blank sketchbooks and journal that are stacked around your house.

First thing you want to do is select a sketchbook or journal that makes you happy. If you don’t like working in it you are not going to pick it up regularly. I would recommend selecting one with thicker paper, but if the one you love has thinner paper just glue two together to reinforce the page (depending on the medium) and you should be all set.

One type of art that is very soothing is neurographic art. Neurographic art is a creative practice that combines art and psychology to help people express emotions, reduce stress, and foster personal growth. Developed by Russian psychologist Pavel Piskarev in 2014, this technique involves drawing spontaneous, interconnected lines and shapes, often starting with a single thought or problem in mind. The process encourages a free flow of thoughts and feelings, translating them into abstract forms. As the artwork evolves, it often leads to a sense of resolution or clarity, making it both a therapeutic and visually engaging experience. I do have a Youtube video where we create an example together. It is very fun and relaxing.

Another activity I like to do to relax is to just draw various dots and color them in. This is also a great way to practice techniques like shading or different mediums in a low stress task. I have a video on an example of that as well. I have a compass that has circles I can trace and I find that soothing. Then I go back and use colored pencils or markers. I like to try and make different effects with the art supplies I am using.
